Amf Roadmaster Serial Number Lookup

AMF Roadmaster Bicycles In 1950, after purchasing the Roadmaster line of children’s and youth bicycles from the Cleveland Welding Company, American Machine and Foundry entered the bicycle manufacturing business with its newly formed AMF Wheel Goods Division. In 1953, after a prolonged labor strike, AMF moved bicycle manufacturing from a UAW-organized plant in Cleveland, Ohio to a new. The serial number location of CWC bicycles from 1935-1956 is located underneath the bottom bracket. The early bikes (1935-36) could have used a serial starting with XX, Z, or A. The very early bikes starting with XX or Z appear rather crude (Fig 1). Beginning with the “A” serial numbers the font is. It appears that Raleigh recycled many of the older serial numbers in later years, so there are lots of bikes from the 60s and 70s that have serial numbers that would suggest much greater age. 1888-1925 Prior to 1925, genuine Raleighs (not necessarily brand names made by Raleigh) had a straightforward numerical frame number.

To determine which model you own, locate the gear selection indicator on the handlebars near the right grip. Look at your gear indicator.

  • If the gear indicator shows a 1, 2 and 3, then you have an Arc 3 model.
  • If the gear indicator shows a 1, 3, 6 and 8, then you have an Arc 8 model.
  • If you have two gear selector units (left and right), you have an Arc 24.

1st gen. gusset by the bottom bracket, a coaster tab but no brake bridge. (Sept'75-Jan'77)
Serial Numbers
(located on the underside of hanger cup/bottom bracket shell):
1975 serial numbers were a hand-stamped five number, individual frame ID. They begin at 10001 and continue until early 1976 when a revised stamp begins to include place of manufacture indicated with the letter 'C' ( for Chatsworth, California) followed by the five number individual frame ID. It then changes again later into 1976 to include place of manufacture/month/year code followed by a five number individual frame ID. Example: CB6 ##### (C=Chatsworth B=February 6=1976). After February 1977, (CB7) the second generation frames appear without the extra gusset between down tube and seat post tube.
2nd gen. removed BB gusset and added brake bridge. (Feb'77-June'79)
3rd gen. removed coaster tab. (July'79-June'81)
